Manweb PLC Chester

Manweb Plc was the regional electricity company for Merseyside and North Wales before its merger with Scottish Power.

Their Chester Headquarters was home to over 1800 staff including executive staff and an integral Network Monitoring Centre.

As part of a major overhaul of the mechanical and electrical services within the building, Dovebrace were engaged as the Mechanical contractor to work in tandem with Manweb’s inhouse Electrical team.

The project consisted of the removal of the main plant equipment dating back to the mid 1960’s, including old Centrifugal R11 chillers, Electrode Boilers and main supply and extract fans.

The old plant was replaced with state of the art new equipment including 805 perimeter induction units, a 750Kw roof mounted Heat pump air cooled chiller, 2no 550Kw Carrier liquid chillers in the basement, 2No 1100amp Electrode boilers, 2No 36m3/sec supply Fans, ultrasonic humidification and associated distribution systems, pumps and BMS systems.

Due to the limited access time for installation works, all works had to be carried outside normal working hours, it was essential to have a detailed plan. To enable the works to proceed smoothly, large scal installation drawings were prepared so all plant and pipes could be pre-fabricated during normal hours and transported to the site at weekends for installation.

Precise detail was required to enable the programming of large plant items to be installed at weekends without delays to the commissioning and the re-introduction of the services for the Monday morning start up of the building.

With close liaison between the Client, Dovebrace and our specialist team of suppliers, sub-contractors and staff the project was undertaken with zero incidents, on budget and delivered 6 months earlier than the programmed.
